Well loved but well worn!

When discussing sustainability within creativity, visible mending is as creative as it comes. By emphasising rather than hiding repairs we can go to town on stitches and fabrics to turn much loved worn garments into something bold and new. Karen will show you techniques to slowly stitch life back into your much loved clothing. We will be looking at adding decorative sashiko stitches and patches of treasured fabric scraps to breathe new life into your worn items and instead of trying to hide the wear and tear we will embrace it. Soon you will be looking at tearing holes and adding stitches to all your items because it just looks so good!

Week 1

We will start our visible mending journey by looking at how to patch a hole positioning our fabric both on the front and behind it. We will look at using a treasured piece of fabric to show off and see what stitches will work to secure it in place.

Week 2

Darning is a great skill that can cover and shed life to a whole manner of worn patches and is a wonderful opportunity to enhance a repair. We will be learning this technique and looking at thread choices to use while doing our repair.

Week 3

We will be looking at using binding to repair collars and cuffs . Again it is a perfect opportunity to use a treasured piece of fabric that you have been saving for that something special.

Week 4

In this final week we will be looking at decorative sashiko stitches that will not only highlight your visible mending but add extra decoration into the mix. Sashiko was traditionally used to do just that, repair worn places with little stabbing stitches and we will be looking at some of these stitches to enhance our visible mending even further.
