Time to play with colour!

This term we play with colour and Lynne will be taking black and white and mixed solids to create a simple and striking pineapple block cushion.  She will also be sharing this block with you in two more sizes, to make a pincushion and a quilt.  When you throw a lot of solids into a project, you can worry a little bit less about colour theory than when you’re using a lot of mixed prints so you have a bit more freedom to be braver with colour and go big or go home.

Different sizes - Different skills

The pineapples in the pincushion and cushion are foundation paper pieced (FPP) which keeps them very neat and tidy and prevents the bulging you can sometimes get with pineapple blocks as rounds are added.  You will be FPPing on a small (and tiny) scale which is a great way to really hone your skills.

The block in the quilt is much bigger and is pieced using regular piecing methods so you will have a chance to learn to make pineapple blocks in the traditional way if you would like to make a whole quilt.

Week 1

We will be talking about working with solids and your colour choices when you work with solids.  The world is your oyster when you use solids.  They are endlessly versatile.  This week we will also work on foundation paper piecing the cushion sized block.

Week 2

During this week we will attempt the miniature pineapple block which we will make into an adorable little pincushion.  Practising FPP on a smaller scale will hone your skills even further.

Week 3

This week we will be making the large pineapple block – and this time we won’t be using a paper foundation so your traditional piecing skills will now be coming into play. Make as many of these as you feel like - maybe a wall hanging, maybe a whole quilt!

Week 4

Finish one or all of the projects during this week.  We’ll be joining the blocks together and finishing the cushion, assembling miniature block into a pincushion and sashing the large blocks together to make a quilt top.  Make one or make them all and have a play with the solids in your stash for different finishes.
