Head into outer space with Freehand Foundation Piecing!

Jo's modern improv quilts have a signature style that use patterned curves to create a myriad of different designs. In this workshop she shares all the secrets behind her freehand foundation piecing techniques to create not one but three stunning quilts!  For the star themed term Jo has taken inspiration from an image of a supernova, a huge and luminous explosion of a star, to create this stunning art quilt.

Available to buy as a single class from mid September 2024.  Class goes live on 1 October.

Stardust, Dandelion Clocks and Sea Urchins

We will be drawing up our own supernova patterns freehand on to a foundation fabric before foundation piecing them.  If you haven’t tried FPP before this is a very forgiving way to start and if you have you will love how quick and easy Jo's method is!

We will then use wonky improv curves to create our quarter blocks. The supernova design uses the same technique and shapes as both Jo's Dandelion Clock quilt and her Sea Urchin Temperature quilt so in this class Jo will show you how to adapt the pattern to create both of these quilts too!

Week 1

After a discussion about fabric and colour choices we will begin by drawing up our 'dandelion clock' inner circle and learning the basics of Freehand Foundation Piecing using both Supernova and Dandelion projects.

Week 2

We will create our first wonky improv curves and finish a Dandelion Clock quarter block.

Week 3

We will tackle the next ring of the Supernova quilt alongside the Sea Urchin block and Jo will talk about how she used this block to create a temperature quilt. We will also attach our first two rings of the Supernova as the block grows outwards.

Week 4

Combining both pattern variations together we will create the third outer ring of the supernova and pull everything together to complete the quarter block. Jo will explain how to adapt the Dandelion Clock pattern to produce her new Pop Art Dandelion design.

We will look in more detail at how to play with scale and achieve an 'off grid' design as seen in Dandelion Clock quilt.  Finally we will take a look at ideas for quilting.
