Scottish Roses

Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a Scottish artist who lived in Glasgow over the turn of the last century.  The "Mackintosh Rose" he designed is iconic in Art Nouveau and is characterised by a stylised, long-stemmed rose with a simple, geometric design often paired with bold, clean lines and rectangles.  So it's no surprise that this is the inspiration for this wall hanging which is designed to look like a stained glass window.

Available to buy as a single class from mid September 2026.  Class goes live on 1 October 2026.

The Techniques

The wall hanging has a pieced background with the roses, leaves and stems added on top.  The rose petals and the leaves are raw edge appliquéd to the background then bias tape is added to frame the roses and the leaves and to add stems into the design.

Week 1

During week one we will be piecing the background to the quilt to create the horizontal and vertical stripe sets that meet at the corners to make framed nine-patches.

Week 2

In the second week we will be tracing and cutting out the various shapes from each rose and from the leaves onto fusible web, fusing them to the back or your chosen fabrics then fusing to the background.

Week 3

In the third week we'll be making the bias tape and appliquéing it over the roses and leaves to secure them in place.  The bias tape frames each of the petals and is placed in order so that raw edges are hidden as you go.

Week 4

In the final week, we will be finishing off the bias tape work, adding the stems to the whole design, trimming off ends, tucking ends into the base of roses and under stems and then you can decide how to quilt your wall hanging!
