The Schoolhouse Sampler

In this mini quilt, Lynne has taken the classic schoolhouse block and replaced the side windows section with a series of sampler blocks. All of these blocks are made with half square triangles and squares laid out in various different combinations.  Have fun playing with your block layouts to make your version individually yours!

Available to buy as a single class from mid January 2027.  Class goes live on 1 February 2027.

The Techniques

We will be making lots of half square triangles to make this quilt, each time piecing them in sets of sixteen using paper templates for a quick and easy process.  We will be foundation paper piecing the roofs of the houses and the economy squares in the centre of the stars.  We will then use strip piecing for the fronts and chimney sections of the houses.  Other than that, it is all straightforward piecing!

Week 1

During the first week we will be making the half square triangles and then laying them out in various formations to make the nine sampler blocks in the side of each house.  The HSTs will be made in sets of sixteen using paper templates which is a very quick and easy process.

Week 2

During the second week we will foundation paper piece the roofs of the houses, strip piece the doors and chimneys, then assemble the blocks together.  Now the little houses all come to life!

Week 3

During week three we will make all of the economy squares, the half economy squares and the quarter economy squares that go in the centre, on the sides and in the corners of the quilt top.  These economy squares are foundation paper pieced for speed and accuracy.

Week 4

In the final week, we will be assembling the quilt top.  First step is to sash the schoolhouse blocks, then piece together the points of the stars and add them to the sashing and then assemble the whole quilt top row by row.  All that remains is for you to quilt and bind the quilt to finish!
