Sustainable projects with emotional connection

In this class Lynne will be making a memory quilt with re-purposed shirts.  The quilt could just as well be made as a memento of childhood using clothes a child has grown out of or a memory shirt made of a woman’s blouses.  If you like the look but don’t have a stack of shirts or blouses to work with, you can usually find a great selection of shirts in charity or thrift stores and you can get a decent amount of fabric out of each shirt so can make a number of these shirts with a relatively limited financial outlay.

Personalise your quilt!

Make the quilt using the blocks Lynne has used or substitute with your favourite 12” block – there are so many to choose from!  We will be learning three ways to make flying geese blocks and working with sashing and cornerstones.

Week 1

Choosing and organizing your shirt, blouse or other clothing collection.  Choosing fabrics for the background, sashing strips, cornerstones and binding.  Cutting the clothes into useable pieces.  Cutting the pieces we need for the quilt top from those pieces.

Week 2

Making the block – here we will have three different methods for making flying geese to give you options in your piecing.  We will also talk about other quilt blocks you might choose to use in a memory quilt.

Week 3

We will now sash the blocks together using sashing strips and cornerstones and talk about extending the quilt to larger sizes if you prefer to make a bigger quilt or to incorporate more shirt fabrics into the quilt.

Week 4

As a bonus project we will making a cushion this week.  Not everyone wants to make a full memory quilt and these would be lovely side project in addition to the main quilt or even as a standalone project.
