Into The Woods

This design uses simple raw edge appliqué techniques to give us three simple, naif trees sitting against a very gentle pieced background.  Have fun picking fabrics and colours for your trees and either use one fabric for the background as I did or mix and match a few.

Available to buy as a single class from mid April 2026.  Class goes live on 1 May 2026.

The Techniques

We will start off by cutting up a piece of background fabric then piecing it back together to create this random grid in the background of the quilt top.  We will then go on to trace, cut out and fuse the dusible web to the fabrics for the tree tops and trunks and then attach them to the background using raw edge appliqué.

Week 1

During the first week we will be cutting up either one piece of background fabric or lots of pieces of background fabric if you prefer to mix and match your fabrics and then piecing them all back together using 1" strips.

Week 2

In week 2 we will trace out the various shapes of the tree tops and the tree trunks onto fusible web, fuse them onto your choices of fabrics and then cut them out ready to apply to the background.

Week 3

During week 3, we will be laying out the tree tops one by one, arranging them on the background, removing their backing papers, fusing them in place then stitching in place to secure.

Week 4

In the final week, we will carry out the same process for the tree trunks, arranging them on the background, removing papers, fusing to the background then stitching in place and you can then go on to quilt your quilt as desired.
