Express yourself with a folk art wall hanging

Let's slow things down and enjoy the joyful art of needle turn appliqué and embroidery as we create this Folk Art mini quilt.  Inspired by Scandinavian needlework Jo has designed this cheerful mini quilt with stylied birds and flowers. And as this is the Text Term in the centre is a space for an inspirational motto or personalised message.

Available to buy as a single class from mid January 2025.  Class goes live on 1 February.

Create something beautiful  with slow stitching

Jo will be teaching you the basics of needle turn appliqué as you bring your flowers, leaves and birds to life, including how to create perfect tiny circles and how best to deal with appliqué lettering.

We will also be exploring some basic embroidery stitches for creating text such as whipped backstitch, chain stitch and satin stitch. Jo will be offering a number of different motto pattern for the centre space while helping you create your own personalised text if required. There will be a lesson in big stitch hand quilting and ideas for making your folk art design into a cushion or pouch.

Week 1

We’ll look at how to draw up our pattern, choosing contrasting fabrics and start our first simple appliqué  shapes with the bird.

Week 2

Jo will go into more detailed instructions for needle turn appliqué tackling points and how to create perfect circles. We will finish all but the centre appliqué this week.

Week 3

Jo will offer alternatives to the set text and explain how to express yourself with your own message.  We will begin our embroidery adventure by adding features to our birds before stitching the centre text and decoration.

Week 4

We will appliqué the final part of the design, the centre circle, before basting and adding our big stitch hand quilting. Jo will be showing you how she deals with thicker thread and how to bury the starting and finishing knots. Finally we will look at making smaller versions of the design which can be used for a cushion or pouch.
